LessonHow a Korean sentence works
박쌤 You can read Hangul now. Let's make sentences! Three things to know.
박쌤 One: the verb comes at the END. 저는 학생이에요 is literally “I, student am”.
박쌤 Two: little tags stick to the end of words and show their role. 는 in 저는 means “as for me”, it marks the topic.
박쌤 Three: the ending 요 makes a sentence polite. In this course, we use the polite -요 style, which is safe with everyone.
박쌤 To say “I am…”, add 이에요 after a consonant and 예요 after a vowel. 하은 ends with ㄴ: 저는 하은이에요. 민호 ends with a vowel: 저는 민호예요.
SceneThe photo club

회장 안녕하세요! 사진 동아리예요.
하은 안녕하세요. 저는 하은이에요.
회장 하은 씨, 만나서 반가워요.
하은 저도 반가워요! 이 친구는 수빈이에요.
회장 수빈 씨도 반가워요!
Useful expression 저는 하은이에요. — Say who you are: 저는 + your name + 이에요 (or 예요).
SceneHow old are you?
In Korea, age comes first!
하은 저는 스물세 살이에요. 몇 살이에요? jeoneun seumulse sarieyo. myeot sarieyo? I'm twenty-three. How old are you?
민호 저는… jeoneun… I'm…
하은 우리 동갑이에요? uri donggabieyo? Are we the same age?
민호 아니요… 스물여섯 살이에요. aniyo… seumuryeoseot sarieyo. No… I'm twenty-six.
하은 아, 오빠예요! a, oppayeyo! Oh, you're an oppa!

민호 네, 학생이에요. ne, haksaengieyo. Yes, I'm a student.
할머니 자, 떡볶이! 서비스예요! ja, tteokbokki! seobiseuyeyo! Here, tteokbokki! It's on the house!
Useful expression 우리 할머니 — “My grandma”. For family, Koreans say 우리 (“our”), not 제 (“my”).

Mistake예요 or 이에요?
Stop saying “수빈예요”!
Common mistake 저는 수빈예요. → 저는 수빈이에요.
Why: 수빈 ends with a consonant (a bottom letter): add 이에요. After a vowel, add 예요.
